I would have put an exclamation point in the title of this post, but the appt was really not exclamation-worthy. The most exciting part was peeing in a cup. The rest was filling out some medical history and then talking through it with the nurse. They didn't even weigh me or check my blood pressure or anything. The nurse gave me some stuff to read and scheduled an appt for me for next week with the midwife. And she made sure I knew not to eat fresh cheese or certain kinds of fish. Check. She was very nice, so that was good. Oh, and she told me that even though I was planning a midwife delivery, a doctor was always available if needed. I told her that was why we picked the UNC midwives (who deliver at UNC hospital), and she shared that her daughter had originally wanted to give birth at a stand-alone birthing center, but she put her foot down. She said, "I don't usually interfere in my daughter's decisions, but I've been a labor and delivery nurse for a long time, and sometimes you need to intervene very quickly". I said we agreed. I had considered the local stand-alone place, which is just down the road from the hospital and clearly has a more comfortable set-up, but we decided we're too risk averse. So yay for the UNC midwives!
UNC midwives are great, so is the birthing center; you could not have gone wrong. Also: Yay, congrats!
